June, 2018

As we finish the 2017-18 school year, students have been working on creating their own probability games. I've been so impressed with their creativity! Students have also been collaborating on a dance that highlights 5 different types of dance. We had a fun-filled play day together, and, of course, a wonderful graduation. At our recognition assembly, students were recognized for various achievements, including participating on sports teams, clubs, Mathematica, and more!

In our last couple of days together, students played their probability games, and read letters that they wrote to themselves back in September.

I wish all my students and their families a wonderful summer, and all the best next year!

Homework:

1) Read for 20-30 minutes daily, even in the summer!

June 4-8

In math this week, students continued to learn about probability. There will be a quiz on probability on Monday, June 11th.

In language, students finished with their second round of literature circles and continued their language/social studies project. Grade 5's are researching a First Nations group or an explorer. Grade 6's are researching an immigrant group or First Nations group that has contributed to Canadian identity. This project will be completed at school, rather than at home.
In art students learned about the artist Ted Harrison, and are working on a similar work of their own. In dance, students are working in a group to create a dance video of the different types of dance.

May 28-June 1

This week was an unusual one, as grade 6's wrote EQAO with Mr. Siefert's grade 6's each morning. Grade 5's learned together in room 9, with a focus on science and social studies. Grade 5's have learned about First Nations groups across Canada, and about the impact of European exploration on Indigenous Canadians.

When room 9 came back together in the afternoons, we focused on the current social studies project. Grade 5's are researching a First Nations group or an explorer. Grade 6's are researching an immigrant group or First Nations group that has contributed to Canadian identity. This project will be completed at school, rather than at home. We have co-created success criteria for notes, paragraphs and a diary entry. We also read several examples of diary entries from Canadians who lived during the 1600's in New France. In language, we also continued with literature circles.
