In math this week, students reviewed concepts in fractions. Students wrote a short quiz on Friday, to check comprehension, which will be returned on Monday. We will be moving forward in number sense to a unit on decimals. I will also offer additional lessons on fractions, either at lunch or after school for students who need more consolidation.

In language, students are working with our student teacher, Ms. Ana. She is delivering a cross curricular unit around the question, "How should people treat each other?" They read the book "Wings" and are now writing an alternate version. Students also worked in groups to create mandelas that show belonging.

In science the grade 5's presented their Bill Nye inspired lessons on the states of matter. The students did a great job of engaging and teaching their peers with exciting presentations! Grade 6 students had scientists in the school on the topic of space.

In math this week, students received their geometry quizzes, which went home to be signed and returned.  We continued our unit on number sense, focusing on fractions. Students learned how to create mixed fractions, improper fractions and how to convert mixed to improper and vice versa. Students also learned how to create equivalent fractions, using pictures and numerically.

In language, students continued to work on their independent writing. Most students are writing a narrative piece. Students had their CASI returned. The CASI is a reading comprehension test. Students recorded their mark in their agenda. Please ask your child about his/her mark, as it's a good indication of his/her current reading level.

In science the grade 5's learned about the states of matter. They are now in groups, working on a Bill Nye inspired presentation on a topic related to matter. We discussed the learning goals and success criteria for this project, and students began to plan together. Grade 6 students gave presentations to the class about biodiversity.

In art students learned about the key components of a one-point perspective drawing, including a vanishing point and horizon. In math this week, students wrote a quiz on geometry. Those quizzes will be returned early next week, once all students have written the quiz. We began a new unit on number sense, focusing on fractions. We reviewed what a fraction is, and focused on basic fraction concepts.

In language, students continued to work on their independent writing. Most students are writing a narrative piece. Students also continued to present their book chat assignment. This can be written at home, as it will be an oral presentation mark. I'm hoping that students will get some good ideas for great books from each other, to help inspire their independent reading!
