May 21-25

In math this week, students wrote a quiz on measurement. That quiz went home to be signed and returned. There will be a retest of measurement concepts on June 6th. We also began our last unit, which is probability.

In language, we continued with literature circles. Students are meeting in groups to discuss their book twice a week. Students are also responsible for completing a role sheet for each meeting, to help contribute to class discussions. We continued their language/social studies project. Grade 5's are researching a First Nations group or an explorer. Grade 6's are researching an immigrant group or First Nations group that has contributed to Canadian identity. This project will be completed at school, rather than at home.
 
In science the grade 5's presented their project on energy.  Grade 6 students continued to learn about electricity. 

Homework:

1) Read for 20-30 minutes daily. 
There will be no additional homework, due to EQAO.

May 14-18

In math this week, we continued our second last math unit, which is measurement. Students have been studying perimeter, area, volume and surface area. There will be a quiz on these concepts, as well as linear measurement, next Wednesday. We will start our last unit, which is probability, next week.

In language, we continued with literature circles. Students are meeting in groups to discuss their book twice a week. Students are also responsible for completing a role sheet for each meeting, to help contribute to class discussions. We also began a language/social studies project. Grade 5's are researching a First Nations group or an explorer. Grade 6's are researching an immigrant group or First Nations group that has contributed to Canadian identity. This project will be completed at school, rather than at home.
 
In science the grade 5's continued their project on energy. They are creating a product, toy or device that transforms energy, then creating a commercial to sell it. Grade 6 students continued to learn about electricity. 

Homework:

1) Read for 20-30 minutes daily. 
There will be no additional homework, so that students can enjoy the long weekend with their family.

May 7-10

In math this week, we continued our second last math unit, which is measurement. Students wrote a quiz on linear measurement on Tuesday, and that quiz was returned to be signed on Wednesday. Students are now studying perimeter, area, volume and surface area.

In language, students presented their ebooks on diversity. We also started literature circles. Students will meet in groups to discuss their book twice a week. Students are also responsible for completing a role sheet for each meeting, to help contribute to class discussions. We also had a TUSC field trip where students learned to use primary sources to research.
 
In science the grade 5's continued their project on energy. They are creating a product, toy or device that transforms energy, then creating a commercial to sell it. Grade 6 students continued to learn about space. In health we continued a unit on human growth and development.

Homework:

1) Read for 20-30 minutes daily. 
2) Complete the math on area and perimeter (gr. 5's). Grade 6's complete the EQAO section on Data Management and Probability.
3) Complete the reading task and writing task.
4) Complete literature circle role sheet and reading for each meeting.

April 30-May 4

In math this week, we continued our second last math unit, which is measurement. Students solved problems involving linear measurement. The learned the mnemonic device, "King Henry Doesn't Usually Drink Chocolate Milk." This helps the students convert from one metric unit to another. The words stand for kilo, hector, deka, unit, deca, centi, milli. Please ask your child to explain how it works. Students also learned about mass and capacity this week. There will be a quiz on these concepts next Tuesday. After that we will study perimeter and area.
 In language, students presented their ebooks on diversity. We also started another round of literature circles. Students will receive their books next week.
 
In science the grade 5's continued their project on energy. They will create a product, toy or device that transforms energy, then sell it using a commercial. Grade 6 students continued to learn about space.

In art students displayed their piece of art based on the work of the artist Keith Haring in a class gallery walk. Students gave feedback to each other on their work. In health we began a unit on human growth and development.

2) Complete the math on mass conversions.
