In math this week, we continued our unit on patterning. Students are solving numeric patterns, and word problems that involve patterning and algebra. This week in language students continued to work on their rough drafts for a narrative with the theme of, "the power of kindness." We also started literature circles. Each student is reading a book, and belongs to a book club. Groups met twice this week to discuss their book. Students will have a small amount of preparation work for each meeting. Please take a few minutes to ask your child about his/her book, and about their connections to the book.
In social studies the grade 4's are learning about Canada's regions, and the grade 5's are learning about Canada's political system. It's wonderful to see the students' voices in their stories, as each story is unique, while having the same theme. Next week we will start literature circles. Students also led their student-led interview this week. They did a great job of assessing and presenting their strengths, areas for development, and strategies for improvement! Thank you to all the room 11 parents who participated in those meaningful reflections and discussions!

We also had a fun field trip to see Mary Poppins. Our class had a great discussion the following day about similarities and differences between the original movie and this play. Students noted that the play included a wider diversity of people, better reflecting Canada today, and our societal belief in the importance of diversity and inclusion.

In math this week, we continued our unit on patterning. Students are solving numeric patterns, and word problems that involve patterning. It's wonderful to see the students' voices in their stories, as each story is unique, while having the same theme.
Students also prepared for their student-led interview next week. Students reflected on their learning skills, and even wrote their own report card. Next week each student will lead their interview with parents, and will discuss their strengths, areas for development and strategies to improve.

Our week finished with a lovely Remembrance Day assembly. Students did a wonderful job of being silent and solemn during the assembly, and the choir sang beautifully! We watched a video in class about Remembrance Day, called, "A Pittance of Time," Here is the link for that if you'd like to watch it at home. It always chokes me up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kX_3y3u5Uo. We also read the book, "Peace" and discussed how it relates to our own lives.
