Nov. 12-16

In math this week, we continued our unit on patterning. Students are solving numeric patterns, and word problems that involve patterning. This week in language students wrote rough drafts for a narrative with the theme of, "the power of kindness." It's wonderful to see the students' voices in their stories, as each story is unique, while having the same theme. Next week we will start literature circles. Each student will read a book, and will belong to a book club. Groups will meet twice a week to discuss their book. Students will have a small amount of preparation work for each meeting. Please take a few minutes to ask your child about his/her book, and about their connections to the book.

Students also led their student-led interview this week. They did a great job of assessing and presenting their strengths, areas for development, and strategies for improvement! Thank you to all the room 11 parents who participated in those meaningful reflections and discussions!

In social studies the grade 4's are learning about Canada's regions, and the grade 5's are learning about Canada's political system. The grade 5's continued to research for a project on a social justice or environmental issue. They will write a rant, and present it to the class. Grade 4's are working on and presenting a project about Canada's political regions.

We also had a fun field trip to see Mary Poppins. Our class had a great discussion the following day about similarities and differences between the original movie and this play. Students noted that the play included a wider diversity of people, better reflecting Canada today, and our societal belief in the importance of diversity and inclusion.
