Jan. 22-26

In math this week, we continued to study geometry.  Students will review concepts next week and write a geometry quiz on Wednesday.

In language, students finished their persuasive essay on a topic of their choice. Those essays are now displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway. Students also continued to present their book chat assignment. This can be written at home, as it will be an oral presentation mark. I'm hoping that students will get some good ideas for great books from each other, to help inspire their independent reading! Students began a piece of independent writing, on a topic and genre of their own choice.

In health and media literacy students did a gallery walk of their infographic texts. We had an important discussion about the dangers of all the substances to human health, and just how dangerous alcohol can be if it's abused.

In science the grade 5's wrote a quiz on the human body  while grade 6 students continued to learn about biodiversity.

Jan. 8-12

In math this week, we began to study geometry. Students wrote an ONAP pre-test on geometry, which helped them review the previous grade's skills. We took it up together and students reflected on which areas they needed to further review or practise from the previous grade.  Students learned to identify and measure different types of angles, including acute, obtuse, right, straight, and reflex.

In language, students began to plan and write a persuasive essay on a topic of their choice. It's great to see students' choices of topic reflecting their individual voice. Topics range from "Sports players make too much money," to "All women world-wide should have access to education." Students also received a book chat assignment. Students will write and present an oral presentation to the class, summarizing a book that they've read recently. This can be written at home, as it will be an oral presentation mark. I'm hoping that students will get some good ideas for great books from each other, to help inspire their independent reading!
