In math this week, we began our second last math unit, which is measurement. Students learned about the different units of linear measurement, and practised estimating. They also solved problems involving linear measurement.
In language, students continued to write ebooks on the topic of diversity. Here is that website: https://sites.google.com/tdsb.on.ca/bffgallery/home. Some students who were finished presented their ebooks to the class. All other students will present next week.
In science the grade 5's continued their project on energy. They will create a product, toy or device that transforms energy, then sell it using a commercial. Grade 6 students continued to learn about space.

In art students continued to work on a piece of art based on the work of the artist Keith Haring. In phys. ed. students practised various skills related to track and field. We also had our school-wide track and field day!

 1) Finish your ebook if it's not finished yet.
2) Read for 20-30 minutes daily.
3) Complete the math on linear conversions.
4) Complete the spelling on difficult homonyms.
5) Complete the reading section titled, " Ned Hanlan: A Canadian Sports Legend." (This is in the grade 6 EQAO book. p. 70-73.
6) Grade 6's: Complete the Geometry section in the EQAO review. (P. 13-17)

April 16-20

In math this week, students learned how to identify and create nets of different solids. Students also practised for, then wrote the Mathematica contest. Results of the contest will be announced in late May or early June.

In language, students continued to write ebooks on the topic of diversity. Here is that website: https://sites.google.com/tdsb.on.ca/bffgallery/home
In science the grade 5's began a project on energy. They will create a product, toy or device that transforms energy, then sell it using a commercial. Grade 6 students continued to learn about space. We also went on a field trip to the science centre where grade 5's learned about energy and the grade 6's studied flight.

In art students began to work on a piece of art based on the work of the artist Keith Haring. Also, Zoe's mom, Arianne, began to help us with our canvases. The theme is diversity, and our class will be created a collage based on religious symbols.

Homework:
There will be no homework folder this week. Here is the other homework:
1) Go on the website on the blog called, "transformational geometry games," and practise your skills.
2) Go on Dancemat typing and practise typing for 10 minutes daily.
3) Read for 20-30 minutes daily.

Important Dates:
Tuesday, April 24: math quiz; school track and field day for grades 4-6
Monday, May 7th: TUSC field trip
Friday, May 11th: Birchmount track and field meet for those who qualify

April 9-13

In math this week, students learned how to draw the front, side and top views of 3D figures. Grade 6 students also focused on creating isometric drawings of 3D figures. Additionally, we reviewed the difference between pyramids and prisms, and students identified and created nets of different solids.

In language, students continued to write ebooks on the topic of diversity. Here is that website: https://sites.google.com/tdsb.on.ca/bffgallery/home.

In science the grade 5's explored different types of energy sources, and evaluated which ones are the best for the government to invest in. Grade 6 students continued to learn about space.

In art students finished their project in which they were creating a work of art that answers one or more of our inquiry questions, with a focus on using the creative process.

April 3-6

In math this week, learned about 2 different transformations in geometry: translations (slides) and reflections (flips). Next week we will look at rotations, and combining these transformations. Students had their quiz on decimals returned. These should be corrected over the weekend, signed and returned on Monday. If anyone needs extra practice of these concepts, I'm available after school on most Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays for extra help.

In language, students wrote a reading response on their literature circle book, including a retell, relate and reflect paragraph to explain their understanding. These are due on Monday. On Friday we looked at a website for ebooks, which we will begin to write ourselves starting next week! Here is that website: https://sites.google.com/tdsb.on.ca/bffgallery/home Any students who were away on Friday are encouraged to explore the site and read some book examples.

In science the grade 5's had Scientists in the School on the topic of energy.  Grade 6 students continued to learn about space.

In art students are working on a project in which they are creating a work of art that answers one or more of our inquiry questions, with a focus on using the creative process. Those piece of work are due on Monday. In phys. ed. students learned how to hurdle!

March 26-30

In math this week, students continued to focus on number sense, with a specific focus on decimals. Students reviewed all decimal concepts and wrote a quiz which will be returned next week. Students also learned about rates and ratios, and solved problems involving rates and ratios. We will be moving on to transformational geometry next week.

In language, students finished with their literature circles. They completed a self evaluation of their participation, and will hand in their role sheets next week. Students also read an EQAO text and answered multiple choice and short answer questions. This is practise for the grade 6's, and an extra challenge for the grade 5's.

In science the grade 5's began to study energy transformation and conservation. Grade 6 students continued to learn about space.
