Jan. 9-13

We've had a great first week back in room 9!

In math this week students continued to work on geometry skills. Students learned how to classify triangles by their side lengths. We also reviewed the names of polygons from 3-sided to 12-sided. Students identified lines of symmetry and the rotational symmetry of different polygons. Students also sorted polygons, including quadrilaterals. Grade 6's learned about concave vs. convex polygons. There will be a quiz next Tuesday on geometry. We will move onto patterning and algebra after that.

In language this week students learned about the structure of a sonnet. We read 2 sonnets that were written by Shakespeare and identified the key features. We also looked at 2 modern sonnets: one by ee Cummings, and the other by Maya Angelou. Students then wrote their own sonnet, which is the final poem in our poetry unit. Next week students will present a poem to the class, and also during our poetry celebration with Mr. Siefert's class. We also began a second round of literature circles this week. Students will read a novel and meet twice a week to discuss it. Students are also responsible for completing a role sheet for each meeting. Finally, a book chat assignment was given for this month. Students will present their book chat on a book that they've read independently sometime in the last 2 months.

In science the grade fives are researching a topic related to human health and creating a power point. The grade sixes are completing a webquest on biodiversity. In phys. ed. we are learning the skills of floor hockey. Lastly, students began a health and media project on alcohol or drugs.

Next week we will have our class pizza party on Wednesday at lunch!. Please don't send a lunch that day. Also, if your child gets hot lunch, please cancel it for next Wednesday.
