Feb. 26-Mar. 2

In math this week, students continued to focus on number sense, now relating fractions to decimals. I will also offer additional lessons on fractions, either at lunch or after school for students who need more consolidation. Ms. Ana will give the class a short quiz on decimals on Monday, to check the students' understanding.

In language, students are working with our student teacher, Ms. Ana. She is delivering a cross curricular unit around the question, "How should people treat each other?" They read the book "Wings" and are now writing an alternate version. Students also worked in groups to create mandelas that show belonging, and did a gallery walk of their work.

Students are also now in literature circles. They are in a group of 4-6 people, and are reading a novel, much like a book club. Each week there will be a meeting on Tuesday and Thursday. Students are responsible for reading the decided upon pages, and completing their role sheet for each meeting. Literature circles is a very engaging way for students to improve their reading, thinking and oral communication skills.

In science the grade 5's began to learn about forces and structures. They created structures in groups, using construction paper, that could withstand the weight of books on top. Grade 6 students continued to learn about space.
